Title: Design Methods and Tools for Power Electronics

Presentors:
Thierry Meynard, LAPLACE Laboratory
Guillaume Fontes, Power Design Technologies

Content: Multicell converters have been introduced more than 30 years ago, and they have gradually been introduced in the real world as commercial products. More recently Wide Band Gap semiconductors have brought significant improvements, although cost and reliability is still to be improved. These two innovations give a lot of degrees of freedom to the designer, and the need for dedicated methods and tools is more and more obvious. In this presentation, we will show how a design environment can be used to systematically investigate the different design options, and how the series / parallel multicell topologies allow challenging big modules using smaller devices with reduced voltage / current ratings. Competition between Si and WBG devices is thus more open and the best choice can be different for each set of specifications.
